EUTOPIA simulation exercise of European Union institutional negotiations testimonials
On February 10-11th, students from EUTOPIA universities gathered in an online simulation exercise of European Union institutional negotiations, especially on the European Media Freedom Act, organised by the EUTOPIA Connected Learning Community "Europe in the World". 2 students from CY Cergy Paris University participated and here are their testimonial.
Natasha Litherland : "Taking part in the EUTOPIA simulation was an exciting and enriching experience, and one I never expected to have as a design and engineering student! I represented Angela Mills Wade, the Executive Director of the European Publishers Council, which meant I was advocating for the interests of major European media outlets. At first, stepping into the shoes of a professional lobbyist felt intimidating, especially without a background in politics. But through the discussions and negotiations, I quickly learned to defend my position and adapt to the fast-paced dynamics of European decision-making. The simulation brought together students from various universities, each playing the role of different stakeholders: European Commissioners, Members of Parliament, and industry representatives. My main objective was to push for stronger copyright protections and ensure the voices of publishers were heard. Negotiating with other parties was both challenging and rewarding. At one point, I had to convince a coalition of policymakers that protecting intellectual property was vital for the future of independent journalism. It wasn't an easy task, but it felt very satisfying when we reached a compromise that reflected our key priorities. Despite the whole event taking place on Zoom, it was a lot of fun thanks to it being very well led by Trisha Meyer and Orsolya Gulyas. It felt like being part of a real lobbying effort! Beyond the negotiations, it was fascinating to work alongside students from different fields and countries, each bringing their unique perspective. This experience not only improved my public speaking and negotiation skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of how European policy is shaped. If you're hesitant to join because you're not a politics expert, don’t worry; this simulation is about learning, adapting, and having fun. I would highly encourage any student, regardless of their academic background, to dive into this opportunity next year."
Iqra Mumtaz : "I was given the role of Nicolas Niennas, a member of the Greens in the European Parliament. I debated, understood, and collaborated with other Member of Parliament. The organizers, Orsi and Trisha Meyer, were fantastic. I do wonder what an immersive experience it would've been had this been in person; nevertheless, even the online experience was nothing less than an in-person session, and the 2 day exercise truly helps you understand the dynamics of European politics. Strongly recommend participating if you have a particular interest in diplomacy, politics, international relations, or Law"
